Do you think with your left brain or your right brain? The answer will help you understand how you, and your colleagues or all employees, think and as a result how to communicate effectively with them.
"The great pleasure and feeling in my right brain is more than my left brain can find the words to tell you," said Roger Sperry who came up with the split-brain theory. Sperry received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1981 for his discoveries of the functional specialization of the cerebral hemispheres. It showed that the left and right hemispheres are specialized in different tasks. The left side of the brain is specialized in taking care of the analytical and verbal tasks, while the right half takes care of the space perception tasks and music. The right hemisphere can only produce rudimentary words and phrases, but contributes emotional context to language. In our Creativity workshops, we teach people how they can become more creative and effective by using both sides of their brains in generating, evaluating, and implementing new ideas and innovative initiatives.
Research on the more recent topic of emotional intelligence provided more insights on how people think and feel. Emotions are more related to the older parts of the human brain and are instinctive, while logical thinking came in the later part of human development. Because of this older connection with emotions, people are moved more by emotions than by logic. No wonder advertisements are generally designed to touch people’s emotions, not brains. In communicating with colleagues or all employees it would be a mistake to focus only on data and logic and ignore people’s emotions.
