How Changing Communication Changes the Culture

Communication change can be a powerful driver of culture change.

HumaNext’s Culture and Organization Change program introduces a powerful process to change how people communicate at work. We focus on helping people change three negative communication habits often used at work and replace them with three positive one. This is done in a non-threatening, supportive, and fun way that serves as an exciting positive beginning of the change initiative.

The empowering positive feeling people experience as they succeed in changing their communication style is then built upon to enable them to move toward changing their culture and their organization. Moving from individual communication and behavior change to culture and organization change is thus achieved much more smoothly and with no resistance.

What the Program Covers

Many organization and culture change programs fail. Yours don’t have to. Typically, change initiatives fail because they focus on complex processes and number crunching. In the process, they alienate and lose sight of the people who make the change possible resulting in wasted time, efforts, and resources.

Now HumaNext is offering a model that engages employees to play a vital role in the organization and culture change process. The program covers:

  • Why and how an organization or culture change initiative can be exciting.
  • Why many initiatives fail and how to do yours right.
  • How to communicate change to generate support.
  • How to get a large number of colleagues excited about change and involved in creating it.
  • How to use the culture-change effort to support other business objectives.
  • What training you need to offer to support the initiative.

Be the Change- The Process and Principles of Change and a Positive Workplace Drive

No Matter the Change Your Organization Is Experiencing, Culture and Organization Change Program Is the Solution

    • Are you embarking on a major organization change like introducing new technology, merger, downsizing, outsourcing, re-engineering, quality or productivity improvement, customer service overhaul, or other change initiatives?
    • Are you concerned about low employee morale, high turn-over, the rumor mill, internal strife and conflict, union grievances, a negative or destructive corporate culture?

    • For any or all of the above challenges, you now have a powerful, ready-to-launch program and training workshop that will guide you every step of the culture discovery and change process.

Our Culture and Organization Change Program employs a Positive Workplace drive that inspires employees to put their hearts and minds into an exciting change process that starts with personal change then moves to culture change. The program is inspired by the following change principles:

1- We must become the change we want to see in the world

This is what Gandhi, the great leader of India's independence, said. Our Culture and Organization Change Program puts this powerful concept to work by inviting and enabling people to become the change they seek. After experiencing the power of change first-hand in a direct and personal way, people then move to make the changes needed in their workplace.

2- Change Is Positive and Carries Its Own Rewards

    • Employees do not resist change. They resist the way some in management try to change them. Employees embrace the change that they participate in making.
    • The Culture and Organization Change Program is designed to make organizational change a positive and exciting process. It integrates empowerment, engagement, and camaraderie in every aspect and every step of the process. People don't have to be dragged to participate. They ask for it and invite others to join in.

    Organization-conversation-change.jpg

    The Organization Is a Conversation

Nothing gets done at work until first someone, or some people, say “let’s do this”. The decision to “do this” comes after long conversations with many people. These conversations shape the way people think, and ultimately drive the action they take.

You cannot change the culture of the organization without changing the conversation that engages its leaders and employees. It’s within the parameters of such conversation that a vision is articulated, planning is pursued, ideas are generated, collaboration is realized, action is taken, and results are achieved.

HumaNext’s Culture and Organization Change Program makes deliberate use of this fact of organizational life by paying attention to the conversation as a way of changing the organization. The result is real human change in behavior and performance, not a surface change in organization chart or plans.

Solve this Puzzle: Enlarging the Window - One of the Exercises / Insights of Culture & Organization Change Workshop

One of the rooms in the new house we purchased had a small window. My wife asked me if I could enlarge it to get more light. The window measured 2 feet wide and 2 feet high. I took the saw and cut out some of the wall surrounding the window and put in a new, larger window that let in more light, twice as much as before. After finishing the work, I measured the new window and found that it still measured 2 feet wide and 2 feet high.

    How was this possible?

Enlarging the Window Solution: The original window was in a diamond shape. The man knocked down the brick around this opening to make it a square window measuring 2 feet wide and 2 feet high, the same dimensions as before but with double the amount of light.

The reason this was a difficult puzzle to solve was that our mind gets stock in imagining a square window from the beginning. The mind is imprisoned “Inside the Box” and was not able to free itself to see a different shape for the window other than the one engraved in its memory.

The first insight we learn from this exercise is: We will not be able to truly think freely and creatively until we step Outside the Box to see new shapes and novel visions.

The other insight we learn from this interesting problem is that we can enlarge ourselves without having to change our core dimensions. And we can enlarge the organization without having to change its current dimensions, measurements, or resources.

This is one of exercises participants do in our Culture & Organization Change workshop.

The Man Who Wanted to Change the World

In the Chinese folklore, there is the story of an ambitious young man who, on his twentieth birthday, became consumed with the desire to change the world. He spent the next 20 years trying to do that but couldn’t.

At age 40, he settled for trying to change China. He spent the next 20 years trying to do that but couldn’t.

At age 60, he settled for trying to change his village. For the next 20 years he strived to do that but failed.

At age 80, he decided to focus on changing his family. He spent the next 20 years trying to do that but couldn’t.

At age 100, he decided to focus on changing himself.

But the next day, he died.

    The lesson?

If you want to change the world, you better start with yourself.

Ghandi said, “We must become the change we want to see in the world”

So the question to ask ourselves is: In what ways can I become the change I seek to see happening around me?

HumaNext’s new program, “Culture and Organization Change” uses this story and many other tools, activities, concepts, and exercises to enable people to create their culture and their organization.
